LOCATION AND HOURS
Our primary ministry is the operation of a Food Pantry located at 8823 Dayton Avenue, North Beach. The Food Pantry has 7 openings during each month: we are open each Tuesday 12-2 pm, the second Wednesday of the month from 5-7 pm, and the last Saturday of the month from 10-12 pm.
We want you to know that the Ladies of Charity Food Pantry will do its very best to always be open, to serve our clients, during our normal business hours, regardless of the weather. We DO NOT follow the Calvert County public School closings. If by chance we have to be closed, you will be notified on our Facebook page and a recording on our pantry phone 410-286-7086.
BIG NEWS – WE STAYED OPEN DURING THE PANDEMIC! WE MOVED OUR OPERATION OUTSIDE AND SERVED 30% MORE CLIENTS!
We have about 40 active volunteers that help with the operation of the Food Pantry, including a Pantry Manager. The Food Pantry primarily serves clients in Northern Calvert County. About two thirds of our clients live in North Beach or Chesapeake Beach. We are part of a network of food pantries affiliated with End Hunger in Calvert County.
The Food Pantry distributes perishable and non-perishable groceries at each opening: fresh produce, bread, meat, and canned meals, vegetables and fruit. In addition, we provide Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter meal groceries to clients. Our holiday meals consist of groceries to feed a family for the complete holiday meal: turkey or ham, dessert, rolls, fresh produce, vegetables, and stuffing.
Once per month we set up an on-site “mini market” for clients living in the senior apartments in North Beach. We load up our truck, bring groceries to the senior apartments, and set up tables where clients can select their grocery items.
Since the start of the 2020 pandemic, we have been operating primarily outside with a much smaller volunteer crew for compliance and safety reasons. Pantry clients stay in their cars, and volunteers load groceries into their cars.
During the year 2020, the number of pantry visits/number of families served grew significantly after March 2020. We saw an increase of over 30% in number of families served, and over 50% in number of family members served. We distributed 160,000 pounds of food in total for the year including holiday meals and regular pantry openings.
The service information for the year 2022 is show below.
