LOVE’S STORY – “The atmosphere was full of hope and excitement …”

It was an overcast day, but the atmosphere was full of hope and excitement as we officially began the construction of our new food pantry. The Ladies of Charity cheer squad energized the crowd, setting a joyful tone for the groundbreaking ceremony. The event was bookended with heartfelt blessings, symbolizing a prayerful start to this new chapter.

We were honored to have local dignitaries, community members, and Ladies of Charity members come together for this special moment. Inspiring speeches from our President and Pantry Manager reflected on the journey so far and the vision for the future. Senator Michael Jackson, Mayor Mike Benton, and Commissioner Catherine Grasso shared encouraging and heartfelt remarks, emphasizing their commitment to our mission.

This day marked not just the start of construction but a celebration of our shared dedication to serving the community. Now, we turn our focus to laying a solid foundation—both literally and figuratively—for the work ahead

Adjusting to the new pantry opening

Our clients and volunteers are adjusting well to the new pantry opening hours and new operating procedures. In addition to our regular Tuesday evening and Saturday morning openings, we also took the pantry on the road to the North Beach Senior Apartments this week.

As always, our LOC is serving the community in other ways as well. Several of our regular volunteers helped the Town of North Beach decorate the boardwalk with garland and bows. It’s beginning to look very festive throughout the Twin Beaches.

Tuesday evening and Saturday morning openings.

Our pantry building was demolished this week and work has begun on our new building. It is very strange to be without our home base, which we call Love, but we look forward to seeing her rise again over the next several months.

Meanwhile, we remain dedicated to serving our clients and distributed 2927.4 pounds of food to 276 people in 85 households.

We received very generous donations collected during Boy Scout Troop 1429’s “Scouting for Food” efforts. Troop 1429, based at St Anthony’s in North Beach, selected the Ladies of Charity as the recipient of their donations – a whopping 1,960 lbs of food and nearly $1,217 in monetary gifts!

Many thanks to the Boy Scouts, their leaders, and all of the people who donated food and money to help feed the hungry in our midst.

The LOCCC are excited to announce …”

The LOCCC are excited to announce that a contract to rebuild the food pantry at 8823 Dayton Ave. in North Beach has been signed with J. M. Davis company. Demolition will begin soon and the new food pantry is expected to be up and running by late spring of 2025!

This was the first week for our new pantry opening hours. We had plenty of volunteer helpers for our Tuesday evening opening. Several volunteers have been busy removing shelving, supplies, and fixtures from the old building and moving them to storage. Demolition began on Monday, November 4.

Thank you to Natalie Cotton from SMECO for visiting our pantry …”

This week at the pantry, we were thrilled to welcome Natalie Cotton, Director of Government Affairs for SMECO, during our Tuesday opening. SMECO has supported our holiday meals in past years, and Natalie shared that she was very impressed by the operation. Even better, she mentioned that some SMECO employees may be interested in volunteering with us in the future.

A huge thank you also goes out to our volunteers who spent their Saturday morningrescuing plants from our garden. They carefully relocated them to a safe spot, where they’ll be restored as part of the landscaping design for our new Food Pantry next spring.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, under partly cloudy, windy, and noticeably cooler weather, we served 278 clients across 106 households, distributing 4,018.60 pounds of food and welcoming two new families.

We are pleased to welcome our newest volunteer, Jeremy Bradford….

This week, the pantry had a busy and rewarding time. During our Tuesday opening, we distributed 3,150.30 pounds of food to 284 clients across 89 households and welcomed one new family.

In addition to pantry operations, one of our members generously hosted a beach picnic to thank all of our dedicated volunteers. There was plenty of camaraderie, delicious potluck dishes, and perfect weather to top it off. We even celebrated the birthday of Teresa the Crab!

We’re also excited to welcome our newest volunteer, Jeremy Bradford, the CEO of Calvert Health. As part of the Leadership Southern Maryland program, Jeremy brings a strong commitment to giving back, telling us he gets more from volunteering than he gives. We’re thrilled to have him on board!

“A Big Shout Out to the Town of Chesapeake Beach …”

This week, during our Tuesday and Saturday openings, we served 383 clients in 135 households, registered 3 new families, and distributed 4,758.5 pounds of food and household items.

A big shout-out to the Town of Chesapeake Beach for showcasing the Ladies of Charity ministry at the “Taste the Beaches” event held at Baia Restaurant on September 21st. Their 50-50 raffle was a success, with all proceeds going to support our food pantry operations.

We also want to recognize Chef Patrick of Elise’s Market in North Beach, a dedicated volunteer with our pantry. Every Wednesday, Chef Patrick hosts a tasting at Elise’s and donates any leftover items to help stock our shelves. Thank you, Chef Patrick, for your continued generosity!

“And the winner is …”

Reenie Leahy was the lucky winner of a bushel of crabs and all the fixings from Tyler’s Seafood, courtesy of George and Ann Klein. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who purchased raffle tickets—this year’s raffle raised over $4,600 for our pantry’s food operations, making it our most successful yet!

In addition to the raffle, the pantry team distributed 3,613.10 pounds of food to 241 clients in 101 households, welcoming two new families.

We’re also excited to share that one of our talented volunteers, Palmer, crafted a beautiful model of the new pantry building. This building will be the future home of our pantry operations starting in 2025.

“We’re Grateful For The Pantry Donations”

This week brought us beautiful weather, with sunny skies, a light breeze, and comfortably low humidity—perfect for both pantry openings. We distributed 3,880.3 pounds of food to 299 clients in 101 households, and we were pleased to welcome 2 new families.

We’re grateful for the generous donations received. Elise’s Patisserie in North Beach contributed delicious baked goods and produce, while Kevin Reilly, a parishioner at St. Anthony’s, donated over 3,000 pounds of potatoes, bread, meat, and poultry. These items were unsold concessions from the Prince George’s Fireman’s annual softball tournament, making a significant impact on our pantry stock.

Additionally, volunteer translator Daniel Ouellette has been diligently translating handouts and forms into Spanish, helping us better serve our Spanish-speaking clients. His work ensures that more members of our community can access the resources they need with ease.

A Perfect Day at the LOC Pantry

With the sun shining and mild temperatures, it was a beautiful day to serve our community. The pantry team distributed 3,196.2 pounds of food to 139 clients across 81 households and welcomed a new family.

We were especially grateful for a generous donation from Jesus the Good Shepherd Church, which brought in 424 pounds of food—including 105 boxes of cereal, a much-loved item among our clients. We received 40 boxes of delicious Girl Scout cookies, which should bring smiles to many faces.

The Calvert County Health Department’s mobile unit was on hand, providing valuable information about health services and classes aimed at improving the well-being of our county residents. It was a day filled with kindness, support, and a sense of community.

Pantry Update: Progress Amid the Heat

In scorching, sunny weather, the pantry team served 247 clients across 79 households, registering 2 new families and distributing 2,637.2 pounds of food.

Progress on the new pantry building is moving forward, with several contractors visiting on Tuesday to view the current operations. Chesapeake Beach Mayor Patrick Mahoney and his wife, Judy—one of our regular volunteers—were also present.

Meanwhile, two of our dedicated volunteers have been hard at work converting a shed into a temporary office for our pantry manager, Barbara. They’re insulating the walls and ceiling to ensure she can keep the pantry running smoothly through the winter months during the upcoming construction.

Exciting Progress on the Food Pantry Rebuild

The Ladies of Charity Calvert County are thrilled that the Town of North Beach issued the request for proposal (RFP) to general contractors for the food pantry rebuild last week. It’s been three years since we discovered the building was unsafe, and now we’re finally moving forward.

This week, our architect and design committee prepped for the upcoming bidders’ conference, set to take place during next Tuesday’s pantry opening. This will give contractors a firsthand look at the operations the new facility will support. Exciting times ahead!

The weather couldn’t have been better, but we still relied on our tents. Our volunteers are eagerly looking forward to working in a climate-controlled building instead of just tents. We distributed over 2989 pounds of food to 247 people across 84 households and welcomed 2 new families.

August 13, 14, and 15 2024

A Beautiful Week at the LOC Pantry

This week brought perfect weather and a welcome break from the heat. The LOC pantry had its regular Tuesday and Wednesday openings, and on Thursday the Mini-Market at the Senior Apartments. We distributed over 4,600 pounds of food to 392 people across 141 households, and welcomed 2 new families.  Our Spanish-speaking clients were well-supported by our fantastic interpreters.

We wrapped up our school supply drive, handing out 57 more backpacks, bringing our summer total to 172. It was another successful year for our School Backpack Ministry.

After the Mini-Market at the Senior Apartments, we had the fun of being featured in a Town Hall photo for North Beach Selfie Day. A busy, rewarding week for all!

“Busy First Tuesday at the LOC Pantry … “

On a scorching and humid First Tuesday, the LOC pantry faced challenges with three key volunteers under the weather. Still, the team pulled through, distributing over 3,100 pounds of food to 257 clients across 91 families. They also handed out 36 school-ready backpacks and welcomed three new families and a fresh volunteer.

Aunt Bessie, our trusty box truck, now sports a vibrant new look thanks to Marlene Bradshaw of Lighthouse Market and Signs. Loaded with non-perishables, she’s a familiar sight on local streets, serving those in need.

The day was brightened further by fresh produce from Oddball Farms and God’s Bounty, while the Calvert County Health Department provided COVID tests. Despite the heat and short staff, it was another successful and fulfilling day for the community!

“Last Sunday’s reading struck a chord …”

Last Sunday’s readings struck a chord with the volunteers at the LOC food pantry. Psalm 145 reminded us, “All look to you in hope, and you feed them with the food of the season,” echoing our mission to provide for those in need. The Gospel of John told the story of the miraculous feeding of the multitude, where Jesus used five barley loaves and two fish to feed thousands.

These passages reminded us of the incredible impact of small acts of generosity. Volunteers like Diana and Gus, who faithfully purchase and deliver bread for our clients, embody this spirit of giving. We’re also fortunate to have the support of local farms, like Oddball Orchard, which provided us with a fresh bounty of tomatoes this week. With the help of our dedicated supporters, we were able to distribute food to 78 families, including five new clients, and supply backpacks and school supplies to 36 children. It’s a testament to the power of community and the importance of making sure that nothing—no act of kindness or gift—is wasted.

“The last full week of July was a busy one …”

The last full week of July was a busy one for the Ladies of Charity of Calvert County. We served 217 clients across 79 households, distributing 2,599 pounds of fresh produce, meats, dairy, eggs, and non-perishables. We were pleased to welcome a new family to our pantry.

In addition to our regular food distribution, we handed out 38 new backpacks to students from pre-K through 12th grade. Thanks to the generosity of LOC members and the parishioners of Saint Anthony’s in North Beach, we collected enough empty backpacks and a variety of school supplies to ensure that the children in our community could start the school year prepared and ready to learn. It was a productive week, highlighting the community’s commitment to supporting one another.

“This past week brought its fair share of challenges and surprises for our pantry volunteers .…”

This past week brought its fair share of challenges and surprises for our pantry volunteers. On Wednesday, fierce wind gusts exceeding 25 mph had us scrambling to secure our signage and tents with cinder blocks and weights. During our prayer circle, we were delighted when three passing teens asked to join us, offering their personal intentions as we prayed for our clients, fellow workers, and the progress of our new pantry building.

Tuesday’s opening was even more eventful under an excessive heat warning. Our IT wizard, Vicki, ingeniously rotated the tablets used for collecting orders in and out of the freezer to keep them from overheating. Volunteers made the most of fans, ice water, and shaded areas whenever they could. Many customers expressed their gratitude for our dedication, braving the heat to ensure they received food and household essentials.

The scorching weather also brought an unexpected bounty. God’s Bounty delivered over 100 cantaloupes and boxes brimming with zucchini, yellow squash, sweet peppers, bell peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Adding to the generosity, local 4-H students and Debbie Jones of Windy Willow Farm in Sutherland donated 770 pounds of potatoes, ensuring our pantry shelves were stocked with fresh, nutritious produce. Despite the elements, the community’s spirit and support shone brightly, making the week a memorable one for all involved.

“former Mayor Mark Frazer visits our pantry …”

The weather was very hot and sunny as we served 297 people in 73 households, distributing a total of 2,754 pounds of food. Last Tuesday, former Mayor of North Beach, Mark Frazer, visited our Pantry. Barbara Glover, our Food Pantry manager, showed Mark the entire operation, including taking orders, assembling food choices, and taking the food to clients’ cars. The Mayor was impressed with the efficiency of our dedicated volunteer staff. Since Mark’s tenure as Mayor, much has changed: our client visits have tripled since 2018, and we moved all operations outside, initially due to COVID-19 and then because our building became unsafe. Mayor Frazer met Aunt Bessie, our food pick-up and delivery truck, and even helped by pulling a wagon of food to a client’s car. We also showed the Mayor the architectural plans for the new Food Pantry building and explained that while we have received sufficient grants for the shell of the building, we are still fundraising for necessary items like furniture, fixtures, equipment, and walk-in refrigeration to continue serving our clients for years to come.

“It was a hot and sunny first day of summer …”

It was a hot and sunny first day of summer when our volunteers loaded up Aunt Bessie and headed to the North Beach Senior Apartments to set up the monthly Mini-Market. Grateful for the shade of the front porch, we were joined by the energetic Schuessler family members—Emily, Michael, and Donnie. The tables were filled with an assortment of non-perishable food items, cleaning supplies, juices, snacks, and an abundance of protein choices including catfish, sausage, chicken, pork, turkey, dairy products, and eggs. We were thrilled to serve 28 customers. One of the residents even treated the volunteers to delicious homemade pudding and cake cups, making the day even more special.

“lemon iced cupcakes offered as an extra treat.…”

On a day marked by intense heat, our pantry was a hive of activity. Beautiful hydrangeas adorned our old building, thanks to our talented gardener. The Knights of Columbus hosted a blood drive and generously provided steak sandwiches for our volunteers. With the high temperatures, everyone consumed plenty of water to stay hydrated.

The day began slowly but saw a significant increase in activity in the afternoon, with many clients arriving for assistance. We served 2,746 pounds of food to 222 individuals across 79 households. Our clients appreciated the lemon iced cupcakes offered as an extra  treat.

On Wednesday, our cheerleaders were seen practicing on the North Beach boardwalk for the upcoming Fox 5 Zip Trip, showcasing their spirit and preparing to represent us proudly.

“our volunteers participated in the dragon boat festival to raise money for food insecurity .…”

On a day graced with sunny skies, low humidity, and a refreshing breeze from the Bay, our pantry experienced a successful and heartwarming session. The pleasant weather added to the joy of the day as we received generous donations of squash, sausage, and whole chickens from Farming 4 Hunger, a dedicated non-profit focused on combating hunger in Southern Maryland. Today, we distributed 1816 pounds of food to 187 individuals across 65 households.

The weekend saw some of our regular volunteers participating in a charitable event, the 2024 Dragon Boat Festival. Sponsored by Greg Beckman Realty, they rowed to support End Hunger in Calvert County and our pantry. The festival in North Beach was a wonderful occasion, bringing together hundreds of people united in their efforts to help their neighbors in need.

In a more somber moment, many of our Ladies of Charity gathered to celebrate the life of Ellen O’Brien, a cherished long-time member and former officer. Ellen was known for her love of family, friends, music, and crafts. Her contributions and presence will be deeply missed, and her memory will be honored by those who knew and loved her.

“Summer weather means an abundance of fresh vegetables …”

It was a productive and bustling day for the volunteers, bolstered by the addition of two new, energetic members from DeMatha High School. The sweltering weather made the tents essential, providing much-needed shade and a brief respite from the relentless sun and humidity. Many volunteers found themselves hoping for the new building’s completion by next summer to provide better shelter and facilities.

The event was further supported by the Calvert County Health Department Mobile Unit, which conducted health screenings and assessments for 23 clients, offering valuable services such as blood pressure checks. The health unit’s next visit is eagerly anticipated on July 2 at 11:45 AM.

Fresh produce was in abundance thanks to God’s Bounty, a non-profit farm run by Mr. Tommy Miller in Dunkirk. The farm donated two full boxes of yellow and zucchini squash. Mr. Miller’s farm supports local food pantries with 100% of its proceeds. Our dedicated volunteer Delores ensures that our clients receive the freshest produce by harvesting from the farm every Tuesday morning.

As the day concluded and the OPEN banner was taken down, the food distribution efforts had served 2871 pounds of food to 215 individuals across 81 households, and three new families were registered. It was a day marked by community support, health services, and fresh produce for those in need.

“ it was a beautiful day for a pantry opening ……”

The weather was perfect with blue skies, sunshine, and a lovely breeze from the Chesapeake Bay, setting a great tone for our day at the food pantry.

We started with our daily prayer circle, remembering many requests from clients and volunteers. Laura and Andrew Glasgow donated houseplants collected over 25 years, delighting everyone who selected one to brighten their homes.

We welcomed back long-time volunteers Patty, Han, and Thomas. Han brought homemade eggrolls and carrot cake. Our friend and volunteer “Chicken” shared the good news of her and her sister’s first and second place finishes in their age group at the Shatter the Stigma 5K run.

Today, we served 79 families with 222 members, including two new families, and distributed 2364 pounds of food. The generosity and community spirit made for a wonderful day at the pantry.

Pantry serves out over a ton and a half of food …

Tuesdays at the Food Pantry are always bustling, and the first full week of May was no exception. Despite our aging building ‘Love’ and the makeshift accommodations of our c-cans, ‘Faith’ and ‘Hope,’ our dedicated volunteers ensured smooth operations.

As the unpredictable weather transitioned from humid and overcast to sunny and breezy last Tuesday the pantry served 96 families, including one new one, seeking assistance. It being the first Tuesday of the month, everyone received a ‘bonus’ bag of household essentials, a gesture appreciated by all. In all 3240 pounds of food were distributed to the needy families of our area.

We began the day with a shortage of regular volunteers due to unforeseen circumstances. However,  our worries were quickly eased when two new helpers showed up just in time, ready to lend a hand. Their spontaneity and willingness to jump in highlighted the generosity and compassion within our community.

Generous donations, including a significant contribution from Giant in Dunkirk, bolstered our offerings. A variety of fresh produce was offered this week,  including bananas, mushrooms, apples, potatoes, carrots, pineapple, mango, and onions. This, alongside canned goods (including a new addition of pink beans) and other essentials, ensured that families had a lot of variety to choose from.

Some  of our volunteers stayed late into the afternoon to spread rubber mulch donated by Lynda and Robert Walker. Their commitment to enhancing our space, even after a long day of service, exemplifies the spirit of camaraderie and dedication that drives our organization.

These moments remind us of the strength and resilience within our community, and we’re grateful to everyone who continues to support our mission. Together, we’re making a tangible difference, one family at a time.
